Welcome Massoud

UHT is pleased to announce Massoud Hassanabadi as the company’s new Research and Development Strategist. With an extensive scientific background, he is a valuable addition to the UHT team and will play a key role in further developing current and new research areas.
Massoud Hassanabadi’s fascination with metallurgy started already in high school in Iran, where he attended an industrial programme in a small workshop foundry.
“I liked moulding and casting, but I was curious to understand more about the theoretical side of metallurgy. What are the fundamentals of melting and casting? How are phase diagram created and calculated? I had so many questions.”
This curiosity led him to pursue university studies in the field. After completing his bachelor’s degree in materials science, he worked for a while at a DRI-based steel plant in Iran before deciding to move to Sweden.
“Love brought me to Sweden,” Massoud says with a smile. “My wife grew up in Sweden, and it felt like a good place for us to start our lives together.”
Massoud’s metallurgical journey continued in Sweden – or rather in the Nordics – first with a master’s degree in materials science at KTH – Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, followed by doctoral studies at NTNU – Norwegian University of Science and Technology.
His PhD studies in Norway involved improving filtration efficiency of non-metallic inclusions using Ceramic Foam Filters (CFF) for production of high-quality aluminium alloys.
After completing his PhD, Massoud worked as a researcher at Norsk Hydro’s Research and Development division in Finspång, Sweden. Among other things, he was involved in the casting team’s implementation of an aluminium DC-casting pilot unit for producing extrusion billets.
“It feels great now to be closer to the steel industry again. I really look forward to further developing UHT’s R&D with a focus on strengthening structure and methodology.”
Massoud and his family are also happy to be back in Stockholm, where they have a busy life juggling home renovations and their two children’s sport activities. When there is some spare time left, Massoud also tries to find time to go mountain biking.
“My greatest achievement so far is completing Cykelvasan, a 90 km endurance cycling race held on the same course as the Vasaloppet cross-country ski race. It was tough, but I managed to keep going – and who knows, maybe I will try it again someday!”
