ELECTRIC STEELMAKING
The electric steelmaking route is becoming increasingly important over time. More complex refining operations and advanced steel grades enter the elctric steelmaking, which requires a strict process control and stability.
Future expectations on the electric steelmakers require new skill-sets and improved support systems
Coming changes generate pressure to keep up
Moving into more special steel grades requires new skill-sets
The electric steelmaking route is becoming increasingly important with more advance refining operations and steel grades being part of the operations. Steel grades, which traditionally have been allocated to the integrated steelmaking route, are now introduced in the electric steelmaking causing special refining challenges to arise, e.g. strict requirements on low nitrogen levels.
Increased requirements due to more demanding steel grade specifications and more narrow tolerances require a strict process control and stability – a true challenge as today’s mindset often is focused on throughput. Tons are important, but good tons are even more important.
Missing out of data is missing out on opportunities
In the age of digitalisation, every single piece of data contributes to an improved understanding of existing operations, possible improvements, and future options. This is also true in steelmaking operations, where making good of collected data is critical in order to be informed of present status and to shape the most viable way forward to stay competitive.
Aged process control systems and isolated data hubs make it challenging to leverage on collected data. There is an obvious risk of missing out on data driven improvement and opportunites arising.
Digitalisation & data is one part of the answer
Trusted solution for advanced processing
The UTCAS® steel production management system uses standard operating practices designed by the process engineers for the specific operations at hand, as well as enabling processing of advanced steelgrades with very precise requirements. The system ensures that each process operates in accordance with the operating practice defined to balance stability and performance, minimise cost, and improved safety.
A strict process control reduces operational instability in each process step, which keeps the production chain intact. Unexpected disturbance will then be kept at a minimum and costly interruptions can be avoided.
UTCAS® is a powerful real-time and dynamic process control system for the EAF, BOF, AOD/CLU®, VOD/VD, and LF steelmaking processes. Based on the actual in-coming data and present conditions, UTCAS® optimizes the process to reach the defined targets. The system controls the processing and offers extensive tools for process design and production evaluation.
Leverage on data
A modern steel production management system represents a digital twin of your physical processes and production units, including representation of most equipments, metal and slag, and processing taking place. Each heat is tracked in the digital world while being physically processed, and predictions are made based on operating practices to recommend set-points for end targets.
All events in the digital steelmaking world are based on data from a number of sources:
- Measured data from special events, such as temperature measurement.
- Automation data such as set-points and measured values.
- Modelled forecasts and recommendations
- Operator manual inputs
All the data is collected and made available for process control, process evaluation and improvement, critical decision-making, and performance tracking. In a modern steelmaking system, data drives the production and continuous improvement process making performance one notch better the next day.
