Flexibility and control of operations simplify pacing
Ironmaking and steelmaking out of sync makes throughput suffer
Integrated steelmakers struggle to maintain production stability and throughput over time, thus risking the plant productivity. It is a constant challenge to pace the plant hot metal output with the steel plant consumption. Maintaining a high iron yield is crucial to ensure good quality of every iron unit.
Stability is key in integrated steelmaking operations. Variations in the daily operations should be kept to a minimum to reduce waste and improve throughput and earnings.
Transformation towards fossil-free operations – entering unknown territories
The recent trends, induced by the climate change, to phase out fossil-based operations or to reduce CO2 emissions considerably, will eventually force integrated steelmakers to change. The task at hand – transforming an integrated steelmaking production system to a new steelmaking system with less, or no, CO2 emission is a tremendous challange with several unknowns.
Maintaining the iron and energy balances during the production system transition is a delicate task and most likely the single most important factor to avoid significant losses due to lost production.
Maximise throughput
The GRANSHOT iron granulation process smoothens any mismatch between the continuous ironmaking process and the steelmaking batch-wise operations. Excess iron is easily converted to solid granulated pig iron (GPI) in the GRANSHOT process, thus avoiding any iron spillage and making sure that all iron is used to generate value. Furthermore, the GPI produced will be made available as feedstock in the down-stream processing serving the purpose as a general iron-bearing feedstock, a coolant, for mass build-up or as a carbon adjustment. This results in lost no iron units.
UTCAS®
The UTCAS steel production management system keeps the steelmaking production operating smooth with focus on plant stability and throughput. The system ensures that each process operates in accordance with the standard operating practice defined to balance stability and performance, minimise cost, and improved safety. Reduced instability keeps the production intact and unexpected disturbances at a minimum.
Stage the transformation towards fossil-free operation
When transforming towards a future fossil-free production, periods of parallel operations where the present (integrated) and new (electric) production systems are used in parallell will be necessary to cope with the energy and iron balance and also to allow for a gradual transition where the shift takes place over an extended period of time.
The GRANSHOT iron granulation process disconnects the continuous (present) ironmaking process with the (present and new) batch-wise steelmaking operations. It acts as a logistic buffer that accommodates liquid iron during periods of blast furnace excess capacity (producing GPI), and makes solid iron available from stock-pile during periods of shortage (consuming GPI). GRANSHOT enables the transformation to the future production system by a flexible iron managment and increases the availability of critical feedstock (e.g. pig iron feedstockin the electric arc furnace).
