With the steel production management system UTCAS®, stainless steel production managers can rely on consistent and data-driven real-time process control for the EAF, AOD, VOD, and LF operations. UTCAS suggests the best processing route for each unit and stainless steel grade, taking into account actual conditions and data, allowing for real-time control and management of the entire melt shop.

AOD converter refining for special and stainless steel
The Argon Oxygen Decarburization (AOD) process is a versatile process especially well-suited for special and stainless steel production. Every AOD converter refining plant is designed based on process concepts involving local conditions, planned product range, and market conditions.
In the AOD converter, a mixture of oxygen and inert gas is blown to remove carbon from the metal. When the desired carbon level is reached, a reduction material is added to reduce chromium oxide from the slag and to deoxidize the steel. During this phase in the AOD converter refining, desulphurisation takes place when sulphur in the metal reacts with the slag.
The steel production management system, UTCAS®, is closely integrated with other equipment, such as a dynamic gas mixing station, to ensure that the high-value material in the AOD is refined to reach the production target.
