Ferroalloys industry
Ferroalloys are used for alloying almost all qualities of steel and cast iron and are therefore essential for steel and ironmaking. The continous strive for improved properties of steel and cast iron has led to an higher demand of refined ferroalloys.
Demands on ferroalloys today and for the future
Increased product requirements
Advanced steel qualities
The trend towards steel with more advanced physical properties such as high strength, wear resistance, and better machinability has led to an increased need for refined grades of ferroalloys such as medium carbon (MC) and low carbon (LC) FeMn and FeCr.
Challanges in ferroalloy production
The demand for efficient steelmaking processes and high quality steel also require stable ferroalloy material and production. To meet these demands, the ferroalloy industry faces a conversion from manually crushed and sand-pit casted materials into industrial solidification processes that will enable high batch-to-batch quality of the material, as well as, a safer work environment.
Our solutions for the ferroalloy industry
CLU® converters
The CLU® process is ideal for MC and LC FeMn and FeCr production due to the excellent temperature control without alloy dilution. In FeMn production this proves to be a valuable feature since temperature control is vital to minimise manganese vaporisation.
The CLU® process provides the ferroalloy producer with a broader production range of further refined products tailored for the steelmaking customers’ specific needs.
UHT has long experience of providing the ferroalloy industry with complete converter plants, key-components for revamps, and real-time process control UTCAS® for refining of ferroalloys.
GRANSHOT®
The GRANSHOT® granulation process is suitable for granulating ferroalloys and is used as a standard operation for many ferroalloy producers. The GRANSHOT® process offers industrial solidification of ferroalloys that minimizes manual labour. The process is run at a low cost, considering both operation and maintenance with a metal yield close to 100 %.
The granulated ferroalloy is an attractive alloying material to be used in any metallurgical process. The granules show properties such as chemical homogeneity, minimum oxide content, and low content of fines. The size and shape of the granules results in excellent feeding properties, which in turn govern compact storage, easy handling and precise dosage.
