Foundry operations

Minimising raw material costs while maintaining a high (and even) product quality are crucial factors that influence the foundry operations profitability.

Foundry operations

The cost structure in foundry operations is changing so reviewing options going forward is more important than ever

  • Calculate the minimum cost of the raw material charge mix under given conditions
  • Consider raw materials and processing options to secure a high product quality
  • Leverage on data to stay on top of production and improve operations over time

Problems accumulate at the horizon

Raw material costs can easily spin out of control

Keeping raw material costs under control while ensuring product quality requirements can be challenging. Using a high-cost feedstock is always safe, but it risks eliminating earnings and value added in the final product.

There is a fine balance between sourcing low-cost feedstock and avoid unacceptable quality variations, induced by raw materials composition variation or contaminations.

Some elements are worse than other

Some elements contaminate worse than others and it is important to know the difference. Not only the effect on the casted product properties should be considered, but also the chemical behaviour of the unwanted elements in the metal system.

Understanding the possibilities to remove contaminants by refining – if and to what extent – could sometimes be challenging. Regardless, it offers an additional degree of freedom and an alternative solution if raw material feedstock costs are surging.

Make sure to keep your future options open

Trusted solution to leverage on data

The UTCAS® steel production management system uses standard operating practices to obtain precise operational control that minimises costs without jeopardizing quality requirements. The operating practice balances stability and performance, minimise cost, and improve safety based on a predefined set of rules and real-time data, such as temperature, power input and chemical analysis, taken from the process.

UTCAS® is a powerful production management and process control system for the EAF, AOD/CLU®, and VD processes common in advanced foundries. The system is a crucial part of a digitalised production environment and controls not only the processing, but also collects all avilable data. The data saved will be a digital representation of processing and is a powerful tools for process design and production evaluation.

Refining operation for flexible raw material sourcing and special alloy production

The AOD/CLU® process is a metal refining process with a flexibility to remove undesired elements and produce special alloys in the most cost-efficent way. This adds flexibility to raw material sourcing which reduces operational costs.

A well-controlled gas blowing removes elements prone to oxidation, e.g. carbon, and allows gaseous element control, e.g. nitrogen, while the slag-metal refining step is a excellent for reduction and sulphur refining. The vigorous stirring enables the process to easily melt and dissolve alloy additions, which also is part of a precise temperature control.

UHT has a long experience of providing the AOD/CLU® process to metals industry including a complete converter plant with a real-time UTCAS® process control for easy handling.
