UTCAS upgrade for Columbus Stainless

UHT is pleased to announce that Columbus Stainless has entrusted UHT with an order for upgrading their L2 process control system. Columbus Stainless is a part of the Acerinox Group, a global player in stainless and high-quality performance founded in 1966 and the only stainless producer in Africa. It is a manufacturer of durable and hundred percent recyclable stainless steel materials with boundless potential as a preferred metal.  Columbus Stainless’s plant is situated in Middelburg in the Mpumalanga province and is a technologically advanced, fully integrated, single-site operation which gives the flexibility to adjust quickly to changes in the market.

For the past three decades UTCAS®, developed in-house by UHT, has served as the level 2 process control system for the steel mill’s twin AOD converters. With the latest upgrade, Columbus Stainless will gain extended functionalities for optimised process control and enhanced features for process evaluation. With the evaluation tool single and/or batch wise process data can be easily reviewed. The tool can be used to replay specific heat data for performance analysis, model tuning, and statistic evaluation of large data sets.

Included in the order is also an extensive support and service agreement.

Process data as strategic asset

The upgrade of UTCAS® process control at Columbus also marks a worldwide trend towards intensified interest in melt shop digitalisation. An advanced level 2 process control system such as UTCAS®, is at the core of melt shop processing know-how, production strategies, and operational practices. UHT has during the past few years noticed an increased awareness within the steel industry regarding processing data as a strategic asset:

Dr Kristina Beskow, Manager Process & Control

A competitive level 2 system today must consider all aspects of steelmaking such as strategic management and planning, agile process design, and accurate and intuitive operational process control, says Kristina Beskow, Manager for Process & Control at UHT.

Given the strategic value of processing data, the UTCAS® platform developed for melt shop operations such as EAF, AOD/CLU, VD/VOD, LF, and ladle treatments, is now offered as a software service. This solution will establish a fruitful collaboration over time where UHT and the client jointly ensure that system performance and functionality continuously meet process requirements and improvements.

– At UHT, our goal is to establish long-term partnerships with our UTCAS® clients. By understanding each other’s objectives, we unlock opportunities for mutual gains and the chance to co-develop specific features, enhancing overall processing performance. We are therefore very happy for having the opportunity to continue our relationship with Columbus Stainless and be part of their further development of high-quality stainless steel, Kristina Beskow concludes.
