UHT & LS Cable signs co-operation agreement for Cu granulation
Swedish UHT, and Korean LS Cable & System have signed an exclusive agreement for granulation of copper with the GRANSHOT® process. Together the companies have developed a new copper product that has excellent properties for production of copper foil used in EV battery manufacturing. The product, produced with GRANSHOT® plants provided by UHT, will be marketed and sold by LS Cable & System under the trademark CuFlake.
In 2023 Korean LS Cable & System approached Swedish UHT to investigate the possibility to develop a prime copper product with the GRANSHOT® metal granulation process, especially suited for copper foil production used in the EV battery industry. The GRANSHOT® process, proprietary to UHT, quickly solidifies metals into granules on an industrial scale and is used world-wide for a variety of metals – from non-ferrous metals to pig iron.
After trials at UHT’s pilot GRANSHOT® facility in Hagfors, Sweden, the resulting copper product showed excellent properties for copper foil production in terms of large surface area per weight unit and improved permeability and porosity. Additionally, unlike copper wire which requires extensive cleaning to remove impurities, the new product produced with the GRANSHOT® granulator, is made from melted scrap and can be used directly in copper foil manufacturing.
In early 2024, UHT and LS Cable & System signed a co-operation agreement for GRANSHOT® plants specifically designed and used for granulation of high purity copper. The agreement includes four GRANSHOT plants over a three-year period. The plants will utilize a rotating tundish system developed by UHT to improve granule properties.
As the EV battery industry sees an increasing need for secure supply chains, the newly introduced granulated product, CuFlake, marketed and distributed by LS Cable & System, promises a stable copper supply with enhanced properties and significantly reduced processing time.
